- If the jack you plug your modem into is a digital port on your PABX, it
- will never work, no matter what modem you use. The reason is that digital
- phones don't use tones to signal the PABX, but rather use a digital
- message that is sent in a control channel in digital form.
-
- A modem on the other hand emulates an analog phone, typical using DTMF (
- Dual Tone Multi-Frequency dialing ) to signal the switch, and responds to
- 90 volt ringing current for an incoming call. Incoming calls to a digital
- phone are also signalled digitally in the control channel.
-
- Most digital PABX vendors have a solution for this by providing an analog
- to digital converter for your modem, but these are rather expense. A
- company call Konexx has a box that plugs in between the base of the phone
- and its handset, and costs about $129.00. I believe you have to dial the
- number from the digital phone, and then the modem can send its analog
- tones into the handset, which are digitized just like speech.
-
- Konexx have a web page at: http://www.konexx.com/kprod.htm which describes
- the product in considerable detail.
